to operate mos inverter as an amplifier should it be operated in the linear or saturation region of id vs vds characteristics?

the slope is the steepest in the saturation region

hi, just see the vo-vin characteristics of an inverter, dvo/dvin (ie the gain) is maximum when both the transistors are in saturation, so its obvious that u have to operate them in saturation.

Both PMOS and NMOS of the inverter should be biased in saturation ,so that we get maximum gain out of the inverter.
