Substrate Bias

Hi guys, For a nmos , the substrate is connected to a negative potential ( or ground). I understand that , this is done to reverse bias the pn diodes formed by ( source and substrate) and ( drain and substrate ), so that the channel is confined to the place between source and drain. Is my understanding correct or is there any other reason ? Regards Shashank
