First learn basics about VHDL like keywords,flow etc..
Then go through the below given site for getting some already done examples.
Check simulation waveform and see how the code works and try to understand the flow.

For writing program and simulating it it would be better if you have XILINX and modelsim Simulator. If you are looking for Step by Step process, just ping me i will send you the screen snaps.
